Ambassador Programme

Sixth Form Ambassador Programme

At North Chadderton Sixth Form, we appreciate the importance of developing our learners as well-rounded young adults that have the key skills required to become good, employable citizens. As a result, we have developed the Ambassador Programme – an initiative whereby all Sixth Form students are required to participate in a number of different leadership and ambassadorial opportunities. These opportunities help build a wide range of skills in our students, including leadership, teamwork, communication, resilience and time management; all of these are hugely desirable ‘soft skills’ that many employers and higher education institutes are keen for prospective candidates to possess.

Below are a selection of the opportunities available as part of the North Chadderton Ambassador Programme:

Young Enterprise

APYE1

Young Enterprise is a charity set up to encourage young people to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Their flagship programme – the Company Programme – involves students setting up their own business, designing and creating their own product whilst competing against other schools and colleges throughout the country to be crowned ‘Company of the Year’.

In the past three years, North Chadderton has been hugely successful in the Young Enterprise Company Programme. In 2014, our team Sweet Course Candle dazzled judges with their range of dessert-scented candles and were close to winning the North West Final. Their MD Chloe Booth also won the North West Young Entrepreneur Award. In 2015, Diverge developed a range of mobile phone accessories that earned them a place in the Greater Manchester Final and last year Flow (pictured) designed a product to prevent drink spiking, with their MD Nicola Webb achieving the accolade of North West Journey Award winner.

Young Enterprise is one of the most highly-regarded extra-curricular activities by universities and higher education institutes. Skills and qualities that are developed as part of the programme are leadership, innovation, creativity, communication and presentation skills.

On top of this, any profits that are made will be split between the company members, so the more successful you are, the more money you will make!

Debating Society

APDS

The debating society is a group that meets on a weekly basis to discuss and formulate arguments around key issues in society. Each week there will be a topic put forward that half of the group will argue the case for, whilst the other half with argue the case against. The objective is to put forward the strongest and most persuasive argument. Some of the topics that have been debated are:

“Should the death penalty be reintroduced to UK law?”

“Is an American’s right to bear arms enshrined in the constitution?”

The debating society is not only a fun way to voice your opinion; it also builds some key social and communication skills. You will learn how to develop your public speaking ability, whilst also learning how to structure strong, coherent arguments. It will help you gain a better understanding of current affairs and pertinent issues within society and teach you how to be a better listener. Many of these skills will be transferrable to you A Level studies, but will also be excellent preparation for future challenging environments, such as workplaces and university interviews.

Subject Coaching

Subject coaching is a vital support mechanism for younger students in North Chadderton. As a subject coach, you will choose a subject that you are passionate about or academically strong in – this will often be one of your AS Level subjects – and support the learning of younger students within the subject.

You will work alongside teaching staff to act as a support member of staff in lessons, assist in revision classes and homework clubs.

Last year subject coaches worked in classes throughout Years 7-11 and were key to improving attainment in many groups of students.

Subject coaching is rewarding in a variety of ways. Subject coaches build confidence with their interpersonal and communication skills, whilst also honing their ability to be a leader of learning. Subject coaches have found that seeing the improvement in students’ attainment and understanding within subjects has been hugely fulfilling and the skills and experiences that they developed were transferrable to their own learning.

Behaviour Mentoring

Behaviour mentoring involves supporting the Senior Progress Leaders throughout the school in improving the behaviour and attitude of key groups of students within the school.

Some students become disengaged with school for a number of different reasons and do not effectively respond to the support and guidance given by staff.

A behaviour mentor acts as an alternative mediatory party for the student to discuss their issues with. Behaviour mentors will listen and advise students on their behaviour and attitude within school. Last year, there was a significant improvement in behaviour by the students involved as they felt their behaviour mentors were positive influences and positive role models.

Accelerated Reading

ARImage

Throughout our school – and indeed throughout all schools in the UK – there is a wide range in reading and literacy ability. Literacy is one of the most important skills an individual can have and research suggests that people with good literacy skills are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better health, better jobs and higher wages than those with poor literacy skills.

Accelerated reading is a programme designed to support and improve the reading and literacy of students who have a lower literacy ability than others. As part of the accelerated reading programme, you would mentor students in reading, supporting them with more challenging texts and helping them expand their vocabulary by explaining technical language.

Accelerated reading is an enjoyable leadership opportunity for all involved. It will help you develop your communication skills whilst building strong professional relationships with younger learners. You may even expand your own vocabulary in your role whilst promoting a love for learning. As a mentor, you will be acting as a supporting member of staff and therefore will become a proficient leader.

Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburg Awards June 11

A D of E programme is a real adventure from beginning to end. You can do programmes at three levels, which when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

You achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five if you're going for Gold) - Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and for Gold, a Residential.

You'll find yourself helping people or the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential activity (Gold only).

The best bit is - you get to choose what you do!

Your programme can be full of activities and projects that get you buzzing, and along the way you’ll pick up experiences, friends and talents that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The programme is hugely popular with universities and employers as it helps develop a wide range of skills such as self-belief, self-confidence, initiative, a sense of responsibility, the ability to plan and use time, the ability to learn from and give to others in the community, new friendships, problem solving, presentation and communication skills, leadership and teamwork skills.
