World Book Day is a charity event held annually across the United Kingdom on the first Thursday of March. The day, organized by UNESCO, seeks to promote reading and publishing, specifically amongst children and young adults.

On the 22nd February, the week before World Book Day, students at North Chadderton School helped to break the Guinness World Record for ‘the most people taking part in simultaneous literature quizzes at multiple venues’. The quiz consisted of fifty questions relating to well-known authors and novels, with eight groups of four pupils participating. Over 6,388 students took part in the quiz at 62 locations nationwide.

On the 3rd March, students in Year 7 (as well as their teachers!) were tasked to come into school as their favourite children’s book character, with a prize being awarded for the best dressed.

At lunchtime, staff from the English Department hosted a number of fundraising games, a raffle, and a book swap. The activities included ‘Guess The Bunny’s Name’, ‘Guess What’s in the Box’, and ‘Name That Author’, with Maddie Cooper (Year 9), Connor Horsfield (Year 7), and Miss Dixon taking home prizes. Hundreds of books were brought in and swapped between students, with classic titles from Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling, and Daniel Handler exchanging hands.
The student crowned winner of the raffle won a brand new Kindle Fire, a fantastic tablet for reading electronic books on.

At the end of the day, each student was presented with a book token, allowing them to pick one of ten exclusive books for free, including Rainbow Rowell’s Kindred Spirits, Juno Dawson’s Spot The Difference, and Cavan Scott’s Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space.

The event was a great success, with the school raising approximately £400 for Cancer Research.
